It has been a great privilege to serve the people of North Southwark and Bermondsey since 1983.

I have always worked hard to stand up for civil liberties and human rights, reduce poverty, protect our environment and make sure that the voices of our local communities are heard in parliament.

I am here to serve and represent you so please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Recent activity

Simon is the first customer at Bacon's College stand at the Rotherhithe Festival, 04/07/09

Make sure you respond to my latest surveys: Simon Hughes' Big Survey (your opportunity to voice opinions on a range of local issues) and Housing Association survey (your HA experiences).

Here you can see my diary and find out what I have been up to! This covers my work in Bermondsey and Old Southwark, in Parliament and campaigning with the Liberal Democrats.

With such a diverse and culturally rich constituency, I am lucky enough to be invited to many different meetings, ceremonies and events. In my 26 years as MP I have built ties with many groups in the area - I am always keen to strengthen these and make more.

Energy and Climate Change

Climate change is the greatest challenge our generation faces. The science tells us we must act now if we are to avoid the worst effects of catastrophic climate change.

I passionately believe we must be responsible stewards of the earth and its resources. Leading the Liberal Democrat environment team my responsibility is to challenge the government on its environmental record and ensure Liberal Democrats campaign on bold energy and environment policies.

Liberal Democrats are the natural environment party. We believe Britain can have a nuclear-free, renewable energy future. We are championing bold government leadership, a massive expansion of energy efficiency and renewable programmes and an end to unfair energy prices.

Helping my constituents

Every week I help hundreds of local people with housing, finance, employment immigration, schools, policing, health and many other issues. I take up individual problems with government, the GLA, the local council and other bodies and I ask questions in parliament about the issues which my constituents raise with me.

To find out more about how I can help you, look at my work in the constituency.

I also take up wider community matters such as campaigning for the C10 bus service and protesting against local post office closures. To have your say, please take part in my surveys and petitions.

The diverse nature of our community and the different needs and views of residents is what makes my job as a local MP so interesting and so challenging. To find out more about the area, take a look at the map of the constituency.

My work in Parliament

As the North Southwark and Bermondsey MP I am elected to represent my constituents nationally.

House of Commons

I am proud to be one of the busiest parliamentarians, challenging government on all sorts of issues from the environment, housing, crime and immigration to civil liberties and equality. I speak in debates, ask questions, and vote.
